Music lovers urged to listen to iPods sensibly

Music lovers have been urged by a major UK charity to ensure they listen to their favourite tunes on their iPods at a sensible volume.

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) stated that hearing damage caused by listening to loud music through headphones is a gradual process, which people may not even realise is taking place.

A spokesperson for the body explained that hearing problems are caused by the flattening of tiny hair cells in the ear, which can eventually affect how the brain recognises different frequencies of sound.

She said: "Normally the hair cells will spring back up but each time a tiny amount of damage is done, so over time it can affect your hearing and you will find that you are finding it more difficult to distinguish between sounds."

The spokesperson added that regularly listening to loud music on iPods could lead people to suffer from tinnitus.

It was recently reported that Apple may introduce automatic volume controls on future versions of its music players in order to make the devices safer for people who regularly listen to their iPods.
