iPod tax cut planned

The so-called French 'iPod tax' could be slashed, it was revealed today.

Sources claim that the government will reduce the levy charged on iPods, with effects felt potentially as early as next week.

Although it is legal to copy music for private use in France, the government imposes a levy on all related paraphernalia, such as blank cassettes, hard disk drives and, of course, the popular iPod.

Currently the levy on the 4GB iPod nano is €50, but this could be slashed back to just €8 under the new proposals.

Apple has not confirmed what effect a tax cut could have on iPod costs, but French shoppers hope that their country will no longer be the most expensive place in the world to buy an iPod.
