Motorola and Cingular in iTunes talks

It has been reported that Cingular Wireless is in talks with Motorola about the possibility of selling the forthcoming iTunes enabled phone.

“Motorola and Apple have been talking to Cingular about it using the iTunes phone,” an anonymous source told the Reuters news aganecy.

RBC Captial analyst Mark Sue also added to the speculation by saying in a recent research note that Apple and Cingular were working out final details on revenue sharing.

Apple and Motorola said last year they were planning to bring the popular iTunes service to mobile phones but Motorola is said to have delayed the release due to lack of interest from operators.

Cingular, America’s largest mobile network, and Apple representatives have both declined to comment, but a Motorola spokesperson said the company is planning to put the highly anticipated product out sometime in the next three moths.

iPods users are anti-social technophobes – official

New research by the world’s leading (dare we say only) iPod academic reveals that owners of the iconic MP3 player hate mobile phones and love being able to shut out the world’s distractions.

British sociologist Michael Bull, better know as Professor Pod, made the claims at a technology conference in Canada.

Based on over 1,000 interviews with iPod owners, it is thought the findings will be a crushing blow for mixed-media marketers desperate to cash in on the global cultural phenomenon that is the iPod.

“These people are already screening out ads,” said Mr Bull, who teaches media and technology at the University of Sussex.

“They have a greater facility for the technology, obviously, but it doesn't mean they're going to want to watch crappy TV shows, whilst they move, on a one-inch screen,” he sniped.

The findings of Mr Bull’s research are due to be published in a book unravelling the cultural impact of the device out next spring.

iPod solution for lazy students

An innovative new project is being trialled at Coventry University whereby students who miss lectures can catch up through streamed recordings downloadable onto their Apple iPods.

Students can download MP3 recordings of lectures to play on their iPods at any time after the session and could eventually also be able to play condensed movie clips of the missed lectures.

The idea is the brainchild of media tutors Harold Fricker and Eduardo Carrillo who insist the iPod initiative will cost students nothing and could catch on nationwide.

Mr Fricker told the Sun: "We are not kidding ourselves - there will always be lazy students who prefer to stay in bed or let their minds wander during the seminars."

But he added that using the iPod in this way could provide a "safety net" which would prove popular and encourage learning outside the lecture halls.

Summer iCrime warning

iPod owners planning to their players on holiday with them this summer have been to be even more vigilant than usual.

New research from Direct Line Travel Insurance reveals that iCrimes – thefts of iPods, digital cameras and other high-tech gadgets – are set to soar as an estimated 38 million British holidaymakers hit the beach.

Apparently, our iPod appetite is insatiable – even on holiday. Direct Line figures reveal that 17 per cent of people plan to take their iPod or MP3 player on holiday, while nearly a third of travellers will carry technical toys worth over £500

In fact, so reliant we are on technology that even on holiday, one-in-ten Britons admits to feeling lost without their gadgets.

Chris Price, Head of Direct Line Travel Insurance, said: “As the Direct Line research shows, holiday theft is on the increase as holidaymakers are becoming more and more reliant on gadgets such as mobiles and iPods and want to be able to use the technology whether at home or abroad.

“However, while they're spending a small fortune on these gadgets, many still don't take out the necessary insurance cover to protect them while they're away.”

Dorset teenagers “bribed” with iPods

Dorset college students are being offered top-of-the-range iPod to take part in a summer scheme designed to improve their prospects.

Students taking part in the 14-week Step Up for Summer course, run by Bournemouth and Poole College, will also be paid a weekly wage of £50 for one day of work a week, a £100 cash bonus if they finish the course and a further £100 if they enrol in full-time college education.

College bosses have defended the scheme saying they are merely providing an incentive for teenagers with little prospects.

But critics believe the scheme amounts to bribery and have lambasted the college for sending out the wrong message to young people.

Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said the course told the BBC News website: “It’s giving the wrong message about the value of education. It tells teenagers they don’t have to do anything unless they are getting a sweetener.”

Students will only receive an iPod upon completion of the course, which similarly to the Princes Trust Scheme, offers team-building and life skills activities such as how to budget money, CV writing and participating in community projects.

Jamaicans demand apology from iPod exec

Furious Jamaicans and reggae fans are calling for an apology from iTunes A&R manager Kirk Bonin after he asked to be disassociated from all Jamaican artists.

The shocking comments came after managers of reggae superstar Buju Banton approached Mr Bonin to playlist his new single “Magic City”. Mr Bonin sent an email to Banton’s record company Gargamel Music Inc, which said: “Please remove me from any [mailing] list having to do with this artist or any Jamaican artist actually.”

Tracii McGregor, Vice President of the New York based Gargamel Records, told the Voice newspaper that it is “scary that some one in such a position would be prepared to make such a statement”.

She continued: “He has undermined the tremendous relationship that Jamaican artists and the reggae music-buying public have had with Apple for years.”

But Mr Bonin defended his actions to the Voice newspaper by saying he was expressing his personal views and not those of iTunes.

“I am personally offended by his homophobic lyrics. Unfortunately I had a friend who was murdered in a homophobic attack some years ago. His lyrics personally and spiritually upset me and when I come to work in the mornings and I see those emails they bring back painful memories.”

The company announced that customers would now be able to take any iPod, iPod mini or iPod photo they no longer want to any Apple retail store in the United States for “free environmentally friendly disposal”. Customers will also be able to take advantage of a 10 per cent discount on any new iPod purchase made on the day of recycling.

The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition has been lobbying Apple since late last year to do more with its environmental practices, claiming that the company doesn’t do enough to ensure that its products are disposed of properly.

The Toxics Coalition described the iPod as “a time-bomb for our health and environment because of the toxic metals that will either go into incinerators or landfills.”

Apple has acknowledged the device does contain “a small amount of lead,” which the company says it is working to phase out but Apple CEO Steve Jobs refuted claims that iPod products are dangerous: “To call the iPod an environmental time bomb is just inexcusable”.
