Text addicts will soon be able to send and receive SMS messages via their iPods, with the launch of ipTexter.
UK-based messaging specialist Com'cetera's service offers real, dedicated mobile phone numbers for the iPod Touch – meaning it can both send and receive messages in the style of the iPhone.
Speaking about the product, Com'cetera chief executive officer Steve Smales said: "Whilst other products let you text from your iPod, ipTexter is the first product to offer every iPod Touch user a unique, dedicated phone number."
The ipTexter will be available as a web application and uses the iPod Touch's WiFi connection to send and receive messages through a custom-designed message centre.
Numbers will be allocated from a pool of UK-based numbers and line rental will cost £7.99.
This follows news that Microsoft is developing a range of application suitable for the iPod Touch and the iPhone.
The software giant released a statement saying that it was "getting comfortable" with Apple's recently released software kit and considering what programme it could bring to the devices.
