Apple has announced that its iTunes music store has grown in popularity to become the second biggest music retailer on the other side of the Atlantic.

The company has stated that new research by the NPD Group has found that the online store is now only behind retail giant Wal-Mart in terms of music sales in the US, with around 50 million customers.

It was also revealed that the store has sold around four billion songs, with around 20 million tunes sold on Christmas Day last year alone.

Eddy Cue, Apple's iTunes vice-president, said that the company would like to thank its customers for helping the store "reach this incredible milestone".

"We continue to add great new features like iTunes Movie Rentals to give our customers even more reason to love iTunes," he added.

Apple recently announced that it had struck a deal with the makers of the US show American Idol to make video and audio downloads of performances on the series available for download through the online music store.
