Visits to the iTunes were up by 413 per cent on Christmas Day this year, compared to the same day in 2005.

The Hitwise market research also found that the market share of visits to the Apple Store climbed 110 per cent on Christmas Day and was the fourth most visited website.

According to Pocket Lint, the iTunes traffic was driven by new iPod owners and people who received iTunes gift certificates as presents.

Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, said: "For the third holiday season in a row, the iPod has been the must-have Christmas gift.

"Competitive offerings have not yet succeeded in capturing the attention of music listeners and the surge in visits to the Apple Store shows that iPod owners are also engaged in filling and accessorising their new devices."

Visits to Microsoft's Zune website were outnumbered by those to iTunes by 30 to 1.

The survey found that Amazon was the most visited website.
