What is an FM Transmitter?

An FM transmitter allows you to wirelessly play the music stored on your iPod (or other audio device) through a nearby FM radio, e.g. your car stereo. Effectively they are mini radio transmitters and work by emitting a radio frequency that can be picked up by FM radio receivers within an 8-10 metre radius. Recently (in December 2006) the law banning the use of certain wireless telegraphy equipment was lifted, meaning that the operation of short range CE-certified FM transmitters is now permitted in the UK.

How to Use an FM Transmitter

Find a Clear Frequency
For an FM transmitter to work properly, a clear radio frequency must first be located. A 'clear' radio frequency is one that no commercial/public radio station is broadcasting on, so when the frequency is selected a clear 'static' noise can be heard.
*

Tune FM transmitter and Radio to the Same Frequency
The FM transmitter's broadcasting frequency needs to be matched to the one on the radio, e.g. they both need to be set to 105.3.
*Some FM transmitters are set to broadcast on one frequency only, but most cover the full FM range.

Adjust the Volume
The volume on the audio device, eg the iPod, needs to be set to approximately 75% loudness. The volume on the radio can be set to whatever you like!
*As with any speaker system, distortion is likely at high volumes

Play your Music
Once the frequency has been selected on the FM transmitter, to get music to play through the FM radio, select a song and press play!

Benefits of FM Transmitters

• No wires = less clutter
• Compatible with ANY FM radio - no special receiver needed
• Perfect for us in the car or at home - or wherever there is an FM radio
• Don't need any expensive in-car fitting equipment
• Small and lightweight
